A research issue explained through people
Flywheel Film produced a short companion film for the Center for an Urban Future’s Opportunity Costs research. The subject is the cost of attending college beyond tuition: expenses such as transportation, books, technology and childcare. The film connects that research topic with people who can speak about its meaning.
Clear production and editorial credits
CUF’s publication credits Flywheel Film for production and Melissa Lent for scriptwriting and narration. Eli Dvorkin, Darleny Suriel and Luis Hernandez are the named interviewees. These credits establish the contributors behind the film while keeping the research organization’s writing and narration role clear.
A film alongside the full report
The client published the video in June 2021 and links it to the full Opportunity Costs report. The film offers a short way into the issue; the accompanying research provides a place to explore the argument further. Read CUF’s publication and production credits.
Planning a film around your research
For a similar project, choose the finding your audience needs to understand first. Identify the people who can explain its practical significance, and distinguish their experiences from the broader conclusions in the report. That helps define the purpose of interviews, narration and any supporting visual material.
Bring the report, approved terminology and source references into the brief. Agree who owns the script, narration, production and factual review, including how changes in the underlying research will be handled. Think about where viewers should go after the film: the report, a publication page or a conversation with your organization. Those decisions give a short film a clear role within a larger body of evidence.
